Change has been the only constant thing ever. Sometimes change brings with it a fresh breath of air. Other times it’s catastrophic to say the least. There are some changes which take place over time and are lasting ones. For instance, the changes in our lifestyle in recent times and the associated alterations in our values. Every human value founded by our ancestors is compelled to undergo redefinition as per our convenience today. This article tries to understand where the glorious human trait courage stands today amidst this chaos.

There are several shades of courage. But traditionally only one shade overshadowed the other shades throughout history. The sense of courage associated with warriors, winning battles and taking lives. But there is courage in staying too. Holding to the convictions one believes in amidst self doubts, oppositions and resistance. There is courage in accepting one’s mistakes and taking the responsibility to correct them. Facing the vices within us amidst temptations, complacency and ignorance requires a matured display of patience, perseverance and courage. But what are the tricks and tips of success prevalent today. Shortcuts, deception and exploitation of weaknesses are the order of the day.

In such hostile surroundings, man has redefined the sense of courage. Courage now lies in answering brutality with an intense form of violence and ruthlessness. Display of restraint and composure are weaknesses today. Fighting for the weak, underprivileged and poor is considered as past times. Tales of genuine courage are boring and NOT COOL. As if the men in armed forces are only entitled to bear such stories of their predecessors.

In reality, we all are becoming cowardly day by day. With every act and decision we make that is filled with hypocrisy, we loose a part of courage within us for ever. To show its true color, courage needs a push, a drive initially. Such a push is provided by honesty of intent and selfless hard work in action. Are we anywhere close to these criterias in recent times ?
