Tongue Cancer Symptoms

Tongue is a soft muscular tissue with several mucous coverings located in the oral cavity in the mouth.

Tongue cancer is the condition when the tissues and the cells of tongue become malignant or cancerous. Based on the location of the cancer, tongue cancer is of two types:

  • Oral cavity cancer
  • Oropharyngeal cancer

If you divide the tongue in three parts, the cancer in first two-thirds in the mouth is called oral cavity cancer. Cancer in the third part in the back third of the tongue is called oropharyngeal cancer.

Here are few symptoms of tongue cancer:

  • Red or white spots on the tongue which have raised edges
  • Difficulty in chewing and swallowing
  • Sore throat that doesn’t go away
  • There may be bleeding in the tongue due to injury to spots
  • There may be signs of ulcer in the tongue
  • Change in the voice
  • Loss of the sense of taste
  • Bad breath which continue to become worse
  • A tongue lesion that refuses to heal
  • A lump or a mass in the neck
  • Swollen lymph nodes in neck
  • Pain in the ear area
  • Unexplained weight loss
