What is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer is a strange form of cancer. It is one of the most common endocrine malignancies. It might spread to lungs which are not considered as lung cancer. The people who come under 25 to 65 years of age might get thyroid cancer.
In US 37,200 new thyroid cancer cases are reported and 1630 people are died in the year 2009.
Types of Thyroid Cancer
There are four types of thyroid cancer. They are:
- Papillary and follicular thyroid cancer
- Medullary thyroid cancer
- Ana plastic thyroid cancer
- Follicular thyroid cancer
Papillary and follicular thyroid cancer: Almost 90 percent of the thyroid cancer falls under this category. It has a tendency to grow very slowly. The early detection of this particular type of cancer makes the treatment easy and successful.
Medullary thyroid cancer: Nearly 10 percent of the thyroid cancers fall under this. This type of cancer forms in C cells. It might spread to other part of the body if not controlled.
Anaplastic thyroid cancer: It is the rarest form of thyroid cancer which is found only in 1 to 2 percent cases. It is hard to detect and the cancer cells grow rapidly making it difficult to treat.
Follicular thyroid cancer: It is found mostly in women above the age of 50.
Thyroid Cancer Symptoms
Ninety percent of the thyroid cancer originates from the follicular cells.
In the initial stage s thyroid cancer might appear like a cold nodule in which will not receive radioactive iodine.
Thyroid cancer does not show up any kind of symptoms in its early stages. The symptoms start show up at a later stage.
The primary symptoms of thyroid cancer are:
- Presence of a nodule in the thyroid gland
- Nodule in front of the neck which is situated slightly below the Adam’s apple
- Formation of a lump
- Speaking problems
- Difficulty to speak in a regular tone
- Swelling in the lymph nodes in the neck
- Breathing problems
- Difficulty to eat and swallow the food
- Pain in the throat
- Neck pain

My daughter has been diagnosed with Raynuards with swelling hands feet and also has pronounces
swollen lymph nodes started in neck area and arm pit also is now in groin area and leg. The hemotolgist test for lupus also but now she has lost some weight and has stiffness in legs and back. He did blood work and white/red cells were fine but now concern is particular gland swelling in certin areas along with night sweats, nausea and fatigue. He doesn’t test for areas other then listed- he said and I qoute I’m not an oncologist which scared me . He did give her blood test and what I have read indication of cancer would be elevated white cells count please advise what possibly we are looking at.
I read about NLH AND HODGKINGS but in bloood test he did would something show up. He also said her skin discolor is due to not enough oxygen to blood vessels she gets red and bluish color. A ny enough would be helpful -appreciated Gayle
