Chronic Pelvic Nerve Pain
Chronic Pelvic nerve pain is usually a woman’s disease, but it can be also due to any kind of nerve damage. Women and men, both are prone to chronic pelvic nerve pain. Now this can be a cause due to any one of these following nerve damage. They are:
- The ilio-hypogastric nerve
- The genito-femoral nerve
- The ilio-inguinal nerve
- The pudendal nerve
These four nerves are present in one’s abdominal wall, in and around of pelvic cavity, in groin and in perineal area. Damage of any of these nerves can cause you chronic pelvic nerve pain.
Causes
The main cause behind chronic pelvic nerve pain is the damage of pelvic nerves, which can occur due to :
- Extensive stretching during surgery
- Trauma in or around the nerves
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Extensive compression, like sitting on a bicycle seat for a long time.
- Cuts during surgical procedures
Symptoms
Chronic pelvic nerve pain is usually comes as a stubbing and burning like other chronic pains. The pain may come and go or be steady. There are certain activities which can increase the symptoms like sitting or lying. Some of the other symptom of this pain are:
- Pain that effects the abdomen and the lower back
- Pain at the time of intercourse
- Pain during a bowel movement and urinating
- Pain that effects the external sexual organs
- Pain during sitting, and get relived while standing
Treatment
Chronic pelvic nerve pain can be treated with any one of these followings:
- Cryotherapy
- Steroid injections
- Nerve blocks
- Surgery
- Medications like Anti-covulsants or NSAIDs
- Pulsed radiofrequency
- Sacral neuromodulation and spinal cord stimulation
How to cope with chronic pelvic nerve pain?
Coping with chronic pelvic nerve pain can be a bit tricky. But some of the ideas that can help you and your lifestyle to cope with the pain are:
Maintain a pain journal
Talk and communicate with people about your pain and how to cope with it. This will help you a lot in coping with your pain
Try to relax, stress can increase your pain to a great extent, so avoid stress and try to relax your mind and body.
