Skin Test to Evaluate Healthy and Unhealthy Lifestyles

A unique way of measuring the lifestyle of an individual has been developed by the researchers at the University of Berlin. One can find out whether a person has a healthy lifestyle or an unhealthy one within minutes. The study aims at investigating if young people would change their unhealthy lifestyle if its harmful effects are visible to them directly.

Prof. Jürgen Lademann of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergy, Charité Campus Mitte, and his team, developed a device in which light is passed on to and inside the skin. Part of this device’s light is scattered back to meter. This scattered back light contains information about the stress factors and the lifestyle of the tested person. The concentration of the antioxidants plays central role in this examination. Antioxidants fight against free radicals which are one of the causes of diseases like cancer and diabetes.

With this method the unhealthy habits of a person can be easily demonstrated through skin values within a few days. Prof. Lademann feels that young people might change their habits when they are made aware of the physical reaction to some behaviors.
